Fever, an experience I'd happily forgotten over the last two years, revisted me recently. Our previous rendezvous, if i remember correctly, was in Jan '06. Back then, he came as an aquaintance of another malady, Pox, Chicken Pox. The day before yesterday when it all began.....
Fever, by the way is an opportunist. The whole of last week had been physically straining. A 12 hour bus journey at night in a vehicle meant for 55, however carrying 70, meant little real sleep. That followed by two days of high energy competition by daytime, higher energy party dancing by night and a return night bus journey without much change in numbers. Zero respite. Back at college after all that, I'd brought along a slight sniffle on monday. By evening, my body began acting funny. There was a time lag in some of my movements. Pains here and there started showing up. I was feeling worn out in spite of having the laziest of days. A clogged cynus and a headache joined me to bed that night....
After brief spells of disturbed sleep, I woke up the next morning with a LOW BATTERY sign on my face. I was taken. A slow walk to college took a good deal out of me. My muscles one by one started letting my brain know of their existance and location. In every which position I try to sit or sleep some assorted regions of my anatomy would hurt. A jaw-clenching back pain however, was common to all the geometrical possibilities i could exist in. My best bet therefore, was to keep on changing my position in short intervals, staying in that position only long enough that the cumulative pain doesn't become unbearable. By afternoon, the fever became just too high, conservative estimates suggest 104 F, and I was sent back to the hostel.
Sweating brings down fever, I'd observed through experience. At hostel, I hit the bed under two blankets without the fan........
Last over... 21 to get.... I'm on strike.. exhausted but pulling myself together... Tension!! the bowler comes charging... Full length... my eyes light up...... A mighty slog, i go for....... but wait! Why cant i move??? somethings wrong here... somebody help... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
........................................................ I woke up sweating. A wry smile across my face... I was hallucinating.... Must've been asleep for an hour or so....
This happened at least once more in the next two hours. When i woke up finally, my fever had reduced considerably. I still have a slight fever today, but i walk with my numbly woozy head held high. Yet another victory .... Without any medical aid...
Though unwelcome, a funny little guest he is- Fever.
